As I’ve said over and over – I hate film awards. The recipients and the presenters always act like Hollywood has cured cancer or something, they are so pleased with themselves. I remember Glenn Close making a ridiculous speech about “what we do” being the most important thing in the world – she actually said that – out loud. And they never give the awards to the movies that I think should win, so I’m always just super pissed off after watching it.
I’m more interested in the Italian awards, the David di Donatello awards – but only just to keep current with what’s going on over there.
That said, today I’m handing out my own nods of recognition to some movies -they aren’t from this year but they are all movies you in the US could get your hands on and watch with subtitles. And they are all, of course, Italian movies.
BEST MAFIA MOVIE
For best movie dealing with the subject of organized crime, there is a clear front runner – Gomorrah. (and I’ll be reviewing it in the next couple of weeks).
Gomorrah is amazing, but also nominated is Angela, a little less violent than Gomorrah and one that I enjoyed more than Gomorrah.
Best Historical Movie
For best movie that deals with a historical subject I have 2 nominations:
Nuovomondo (The Golden Door), the story of a family who comes through Ellis Island to America from Sicily:
And Vincere, the story of Mussolini and his secret lover, Ida Dalser.
And last one for today, BEST ROMANTIC MOVIE, 2 nominations:
Pane e Tulipani (Bread and Tulips) – even if it’s just Venice that you love.
And La Finestra di Fronte (Facing Windows) with that handsome Raoul Bova.
More tomorrow, so stay tuned!
