Speaking of Giovanna Mezzogiorno…Brava!

Vincere

Speaking of Giovanna Mezzogiorno, and I have been talking about her a lot lately ( La Bestia Nel Cuore, La Finestra di Fronte, Vincere), she’s surprised a lot of people this past week – she was awarded best actress by  the National Society of Film Critics for her performance in Vincere. In Vincere, which means “to win”, she plays the secret lover of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini. She beat out Annette Bening (The Kids Are Alright) and Lesley Manville (Another Year), who came in second and third and all I have to say is, it’s about time!

The National Society of Film Critics is a group of 61 of the top media groups in the United States and this year 46 voted. I don’t know why this 2009 movie was even eligible this year for the award – maybe because it was playing in US theaters this year? I don’t really care. It deserved to win something. Giovanna Mezzogiorno deserves to be recognized. And Italy deserves a little respect.
