OK,I’ve used the word “sexy” in the title as a cheap trick for attention, but in my defense Commediasexi did it to me first. I was in Rome in 2006 when this movie came out and the posters were everywhere – the sexxxxxy posters, with Elena Santarelli sprawled across the bottom in a tight, shiny pink outfit and Paolo Bonolis looking like his sexy self. About him – nobody has ever been able to give me a straight answer about why this guy is so popular in Italy. Commediasexi had cinepanettone (silly Italian comedy released during the Christmas season) written all over it.
And of course I couldn’t wait to see it.
I love a “so bad it’s good” movie – I’m practically addicted to “Lifetime” movies – but Commediasexi was a little confusing. After all, Margherita Buy (Gironi e Nuvole) was in it, and she’s a big time legitimate movie star who’s won a bunch of awards. And there was Sergio Rubini, who I like, and Stefania Rocca, who was so good in La Bestia Nel Cuore
. But with a name like Commediasexi, I felt certain I’d found my vacation’s “guilty pleasure” movie. There I sat, at the movie theater, ready to mock it, but guess what – I liked it.
Oh, it’s stupid, but it knows it’s stupid. It’s a good old fashioned giant casted, slapstick infused farce – like the kind that Rock Hudson and Doris Day used to make. Bonolis plays Massimo, a sleazy politician that takes his orders from the Vatican and is trying to get some kind of pro-family bill passed in the parliament. Of course, he’s cheating on his wife with Martina, played by Elena Santarelli, who I guess we are supposed to sympathize with even though she’s sneaking around with a rich married man who is advancing her career. Massimo’s driver, Mariano, played by Rubini, gets caught in the crossfire and hilarity ensues. Politicians, priests, nuns, family members, and samba dancers are all over the place, fighting, dancing, and mugging the camera. It’s great.
In the end, the good guys win, and the bad guy gets humiliated just as you want him to. Commediasexi isn’t trying to be anything other than a lot of fun – and it is.
My husband gave it 2 thumbs up and doesn’t speak a word of Italian. Here’s the trailer – you don’t need to speak any to get the idea. If you had a region free DVD player you could see it all!
