Good News For The Cast Of The Jersey Shore

I’m here, in my little apartment near Campo de’ Fiori and guess what? There’s a movie theater right on the piazza so I dragged my jet lagged self to the movies. I saw something that I hadn’t read much about, Qualunquemente, with Antonio Albanese (Giorni e Nuvole)and Sergio Rubino. I guess it’s a comedy that has been borrowed from a tv show but I didn’t find myself laughing – ever. It’s a farce about this guy, Cetto La Qualunque (“La qualunque” means “the whatever”, and qualunquemente means “whateverly” ) from Calabria that has been away being a big pig in some other country and returns to Italy to be one there. He has some business problems and runs for mayor so that he can take care of them and I guess it’s supposed to be satirizing Berlusconi. Secondo me, in my opinion, it’s a dig at the Italian population, or at least the southern Italian population, insinuating that they’ll vote for any racist, sexist, narcissist that can talk over the more reasonable candidates.

Cetto’s campaign slogan is “Pilu per tutti” and I had to look that one up – my Italian teacher didn’t tell me about “pilu” – it’s Calabrian dialect and means tail or booty. “Vote for Cetto, More Tail For Everyone”. I didn’t like it but it was fun being at the movies! On the plus side, if those “Jersey Shore” people can find Cetto when they move to Italy they’ll feel right at home.

I have no AT&T service with my iPad (when I called they said, “oops!”. They actually said that ) – they forgot to turn it on and apparently it’s harder to do from here. So, I’ll be searching for wi-fi and posting more sporadically until I get it fixed.

Here’s the good news – La Banda Dei Babbi Natale is at one theater for 3 more days so I’m going tomorrow!
