Today I saw “La Bellezza del Somaro” and I am still in shock. I am a big fan of Sergio Castellito and even though it didn’t look like this movie was doing very well I was still excited to see it. Castellito wrote it with his wife, Margeret Mazzantini (author of Non Ti Muovere), he directed it, and he starred in it, along with Laura Morante (La Stanza Del Figlio). I thought, “This must be one of those really esoteric films that the public takes awhile to cosy up to.” Unfortunately, there is nothing cosy about it.

What is it with these movies with big casts and a dozen different story lines anyway? Enough! Why do we have to have all these “quirky” friends in the story and their overblown personalities – it’s contrived and it wears me out. I blame “The Big Chill” – it was OK but the genre is no longer amusing and I wish movie makers would stop trying to copy it.
If they had make this a movie about a father (Castellito), a mother (Morante) and a daughter ( Erika Blanc) and left it at that I might have liked it. It could have been interesting – these indulgent parents that get tested by their teenager when she figures that they aren’t going to ever tell her “no” and introduces them to her new boyfriend, a guy in his 60s. It could have been good – the idea is good.
But, oh my god the overacting. Oh my god the annoying “eccentric” friends. Oh my god the screaming.
I – HATED – IT. Get a grip, Sergio. You are better than this.
