Everything From "The King’s Speech" to Riccardo Scamarcio

Do I have to go home?

I’m in my little apartment near Campo de’ Fiori in Rome, and I’ve just come back from the movies. I’ve already uncorked the wine and I’m ready to make something to eat. I bought fresh gnocchi and vegetables from the market today and I’m cooking while I watch the BAFTA red carpet festivities on BBC. Could this be “I Am Love”‘s night? (PS – It wasn’t.)

Kind of, sort of on purpose I went to see “Il DIscorso Del Re”, “The King’s Speech” today, dubbed in Italian – now I can get more excited watching it win awards. It was wonderful and I actually cried at the end (I’m such a sap). I’m not going to go on and on about how much I loved a non-Italian movie, so today I just have some random thoughts about, well, everything:

1) I hate the commercials that they show before movies in America, but for some reason they are way more entertaining in Italian theaters. I think they are, as a rule, more entertaining than the Superbowl commercials were this year. I don’t know what that’s about or if anyone cares.

2) American movies are marketed hilariously differently in Italy. If I hadn’t seen the trailers for “Love and Other Drugs” in America I’d have thought that it was about nothing other than SEX, SEX, and MORE SEX here in Italy.

3) Marianne from Denmark posted here that Qualunquemente got a standing ovation at the Berlin Film Festival, so I guess that shows how much I know.

4) I bought a ticket for another play, and this time I don’t care if it is good or bad – I just want to get a look at Riccardo Scamarcio!!!! He’s in a theater production of Romeo and Giulietta and Oh My God…I get to see Riccardo Scamarcio!

The bad news:

1) Italian film magazine “Ciak” gave 3 stars to “Immaturi” and only 2 stars to “Biutiful”. I don’t even know what to say about that.

2) I’m still pissed that I’m missing Manuale d’Amore 3, I’m still pissed at Sergio Castellito for making “La Bellezza del Somaro”, I wish Lauren didn’t have to go back to New York, and I still want ice with my diet coke!
