I’ve been so lucky to be here and all I can think about is the movies I’ll be missing when I leave – Nanni Moretti’s “Habemus Papum” is at the top of the list.
Moretti (La Stanza Del Figlio) wil be presenting Habemus Papum (We have a Pope) the story of a depressed Pope and his therapist, at Cannes. On Cinecitta’ sound stages the ghetto, the French Embassy, and the Sistine Chapel were all reproduced to scale at a budget of nine million euro. Moretti’s story of the Catholic Church will not, refreshingly for us Catholics, deal with scandals, but of the Pope, the man, a human being who is, of course, fallible and afraid of things, just like the rest of us.
Moretti promises Cardinals sweating on exercise bikes, card playing prelates, and a Pope so terrified of being Pope that he runs away to perform Cechov. It will show us a world we don’t consider when a new Pope is elected – of the bookmakers and the bets, of the tv cameras and of the weight of it all – it’s not like winning the lottery, after all. Being the Pope is a pretty big responsibility.
Also starring Margherita Buy (love her), Nanni Moretti plays the psychiatrist, and everything I know about Moretti tells me that this will be a story told thoughtfully and with sensitivity.
