| Monica with Ne Niro in Manuale d’Amore 3 |
Monica Bellucci, star of the new “Manuale d’Amore 3, is one of Italy’s most internationally famous actresses. Called by some the “Diva’s Diva”, she’s got it all. She’s made a great career of playing beautiful seductresses, and her latest “victim” is Robert De Niro, her Manuale d’Amore 3 costar. She’s been married to Vincent Cassel (Black Swan) since 1999 and they have two children.
In a recent interview with Mattia Carzaniga, she calls her role as Viola “very beautiful, with a femininity that is so strong that she becomes paradoxically fragile.” I’m not sure if I just translated that poorly or if it’s just that the ideas of sexuality and femininity are pretty different in Italy.
In this country, I think we see femininity as an inherently weak characteristic – but in Italy, it’s a force to be reckoned with. In Italy, the woman who understands the power of her femininity is the woman who wins.
I’ll never forget what Sofia Loren told Larry King when he asked her if it bothered her that she was seen as a sex object. She looked at him like he was crazy, and then said, “Why would it? It’s a compliment.”Manuale d’Amore 3 opened Friday “without a bang” with a disappointing 407,000 euro but I’m still waiting to hear about it from people I know in Italy.
