Why is Google screwing with me?
A couple of weeks ago the search engine made changes to its search algorithm supposedly to better the quality of content in searches and lots of blogs were hurt by it; mine was one. In it’s quest to rid itself of sites with unoriginal content, loveitalianmovies.com got caught in its web – ouch.
What hurts more – that they are calling me a “content farm”, whatever the hell that is, or that they have this much power over my insignificant blog? When Google cut me from its searches my traffic dropped 75% in one day.
Meanwhile, the “excellent content” in the new improved google search of Italian movies is curious. If you search for “I love italian movies” you won’t find me, but you will find the “I Love Lucy” episode in which Lucy goes to Italy. Is that what you were looking for?
To complicate things, a week after I disappeared from google searches I reappeared – for three days – and now I’m gone again.
There is no one to complain to. There is a a place to submit a site for reconsideration but I’ve read that no individual site will be “fixed”. And there’s a help forum where others like me are bitching and blowing off steam. I feel like I’m talking to a wall.
I write original content daily and, as far as I can see, am pretty alone in writing about modern Italian movies for English speaking audiences. I don’t expect everyone to love the topic or my writing, but at least I am original, the very thing Google says I’m not.
If you like my blog tell your friends, because Google doesn’t want to anymore – I’m dead to them.
