| Woody Allen at the Carlye in New York |
So Woody Allen’s making his next movie in Rome – this should be interesting. Lauren and I have seen him in New York , many times, actually, and he seems kind of nutty. If Romans think I’m crazy for wanting ice with my Coca Lite, I can’t imagine what they are going to think of Woody Allen.
For those of you lucky to be in Rome this month you can go see him playing the clarinet with his New Orleans Jazz Band on March 26 at the Auditorium della Conciliazione, his only performance in the city. He says that they’ll be playing, as usual, his favorites, music from Sidney Bechet, George Lewis, Jonny Dodds, Jimmie Noone e Louis Armstrong. Lauren and I once spent way to much money to eat shitty food and sit at an uncomfortable table at the Hotel Carlyle in New York to see them play – it was OK but I wouldn’t do it again. It’s was one of those things that I did to say that I did it.
He told La Repubblica that he won’t talk about the movie yet because he’s superstitious and that it’s just in the screenplay stage. When asked how important music is to him, he said “much more than I can express. It’s one of the small things that makes life worth living. Like food and making love, undeniable pleasures. They penetrate your ears and invade your body and make you feel beauty. That’s why it is so important in my films. Many scenes that would be otherwise not very interesting, thanks to music they become tolerable and even beautiful.
So Woody, have fun in Rome but remember, When in Rome…well, be yourself but tone it down a little. And one more thing – hire Italian actors for the film!
