The critics seem divided on director Vincenzo Terracciano’s Tris di Donne e Abiti Nuziali ( also known as “Bets and Wedding Dresses). Some did that tedious critic thing where they give it a bad review just for the chance to be clever with metaphors ( like writing that filmmakers made a bad bet on the movie and playing the wrong hand) and some liked it, but beyond what the critics had to say, it just didn’t get the attention that it should have.
Starring Sergio Castellito (Non ti Muovere
) and Martina Gedeck (Mostly Martha
) it’s the story of a family with money problems – money problem caused by Dad’s gambling addiction. He loves his family but he hasn’t made it easy for them over the years. Somehow they’ve managed to scrape by and keep a roof over their heads until his retirement and things get out of control. His daughter, planning her wedding and under the impression that there is money for it, has to face a harsh reality and his wife and son, though they love him still, declare that enough is enough and take control of the situation in a pretty interesting way.
Tris di Donne e Abiti Nuziali is good in so many and the most important is in the acting – Sergio Castellito is without a doubt one of Italy’s finest and Martina Gedeck is wonderful – she was named “best actress” by the European Film Awards for “The Lives of Others
” ( a German film that won an academy award for best foreign film).
The story, the dialogue and the emotions are very real and believable and the bittersweet connection between the father and his family rings true. I enjoyed it. It kept my attention from beginning to end and I genuinely interested in the outcome. Good actors, good plot, good dialogue – what else do you want in movie? Again, this one was not released for US DVD players and unless you have a region free one you can’t watch it, but it only grossed about 250,000 euro in Italy so in reality hardly anyone saw it at all. So why do Italians flock to the stupidist (is that a word?) of the Hollywood movies and ignore this one?
You tell me.
