>My David di Donatello Checklist – Part 1

>

Benvenuti al Sud

The Italian Oscars – The David di Donatello Awards – will be given out on May 6 and I’m going to try to see how many of the potential nominees I can see before they announce the actual ones in April. The entire list of possible movies is HERE but I’m only counting the ones that I believe can actually win.  Are you with me? Let’s take a good look at the state of Italian filmmaking 2010/2011.

20 SIGARETTE (20 Cigarettes) Autobiographical story of a guy who decides he wants to do some filming in Iraq. I’ve ordered it.

BASILICATA COAST TO COAST – This one is showing at our film festival in Cleveland, Ohio and I’m going to review it later in the week. It’s the story of a band and a music reviewer that cross Basilicata on foot to get to a concert. I’ve seen it and I’ll review it soon.

BENVENUTI AL SUD – Remake of a French comedy. Looks good – it’s the story of a family that relocates to Italy’s south.  I have it but haven’t watched it yet.

CHE BELLA GIORNATA – Starring the new big thing in Italy – Checco. We’ll see if the David di Donatellos love him as much as the audiences did. I’ve seen it and I reviewed it HERE.

Che Bella Giornata

COSAVOGLIODIPIU’ – This is the story of an affair and its consequences. Written and directed by Silvio Soldini, I’ve seen it and I reviewed it HERE.

FEBBRE DA FIENO – I’ll see this one at the Cleveland Film Festival and it is not yet available on DVD.

GIANNI E LE DONNE – I hope this one one wins something! It’s about a retired man that considered taking on a lover to spice up his life a little.  I saw it in Italy and reviewd it HERE.

Cosavogliodipiù

HAPPY FAMILY – This one was well liked – by everybody but me, apparently. I never even finished it because I got bored. I’ll give it another chance. I have it.

IL COMPLEANNO – Don’t know how I missed this one – it’s the story of a guy who spends the summer at a big vacation house with his friends and it looks a little dark. I’ve ordered it.

IL GIOIELLINO – This one opened right after I left Rome but it looked great. It stars Tony Servillo and is about the bankruptcy of Parmalat. It’s not yet available on DVD.

Il Gioiellino

IL PADRE E LO STRANIERO – Interesting story but I’ll be surprised if it wins anything.  I saw it in Italy and reviewed it HERE.

I am delighted to say that there are many more and I will continue this list tomorrow!
