There just isn’t the same frenzy around the David di Donatello Awards as there is the Oscars, but the Italian Academy Awards are something I look forward to. The David di Donatello Awards, named after Donatello’s David, are movie award sgiven each year for cinematic performances and production by the Accademia del Cinema Italiano. It’s the Italian equivalent to our Academy Awards and there are 24 categories. This year they will be awarded on May 6 in Rome.
They were first given in Rome in the spring of 1955 and they are awarded primarily to Italian films, with a category dedicated to foreign language films. Awards have been given to De Sica, Fellini, Zeffirelli , and Leone – last year it went to Marco Bellocchio for “Vincere“.
As I look at the list of films that have been released in 2010 I realize that I have no idea who will be nominated and I’ll just sit back and wait until the nominations are announced in April. Then, I will tell you who I think will win, who I think should win, and announce a contest. There will be a prize for the person who comes closest to picking the winners, so look back at the lists I’ve been making on this blog of potential nominees and start watching as many as you can. If more than one person picks all categories correctly I will have a random drawing and the winner will be announced here at iloveitalianmovies.com.
You’re getting David di Donatello fever; right? I know I am!
