Americans know a thing or two about north/south differences of opinions (we had a little war about it in the 1800s if you remember). As a visitor to Italy I love the north and the south, even though Rome is officially my favorite city. The Romans are great (they are the most likely to be honest and tell me when I’m doing something stupid) and the city is exciting. But I can imagine myself living practically anywhere I’ve been there. Amazing, isn’t it? A country so relatively small and yet so diverse?
Personally, sometimes it seems like nobody in Italy likes anybody. People in Milan make fun of Romans, Romans make fun of the Milanese. People from Florence hate people from Siena and vice versa. I could go on (and on and on). But the division between north and south is the most noticeable.
Tomorrow I’m going to talk about the movie “Benvenuti al Sud“, a remake of a French comedy about a postal employee who is looking to get transferred from his small town to Milan, but things go wrong and he ends up moving with his family to Campania. Afterwards I’m going to take a good look at this little north-south feud they’ve got going on there.
