Here I go again, translating with my limited Italian; this time it’s an interview with one of my favorites – Margherita Buy (from mymovies.it ). Margherita Buy, or La Buy, as they would say in Italy, is one of the most talented, durable movie stars in Italy today and having read the interview I see why she’s been so comfortable playing characters on psychiatrists couches. If you want to know more about her, read my “Margherita Buy, Approaching 50 and Still Kicking Ass.”
A word to Margherita, I apologize for this bad translation and – I wish you would make movies in America!
In the cast of Habemus Papam the actress makes a parallel between her life and her character.”It’s a miracle that anything happens in life. I don’t really know why I do this job. It’s better than those, and there are many in the country, that make a ton of money but aren’t at all happy”.
In Nanni Moretti’s Habemus Papam she plays a psychoanalyst, and in reality she has been a patient. “From time to time I need to adjust my focus, to pare myself down. The first time was about 30 years ago. Now, once in a while I have little chats with behavioral psychologists”, explains the actress.
Buy emphasis that “They help me see my life more clearly. A professional sees things more objectively. Then I can accept certain aspects of my character. I’m not always good with people, I’m not always confident at public appearances, I don’t have much faith in myself and please don’t make me speak in public”.
Determination is not her strong point. “On this there is not doubt. For years I told myself, ‘Margherita, you have to work abroad’. I tried, but with such little conviction that nothing came of it. I admired Valeria Golino and her films in Los Angeles, but she is so strong. An astronaut, compared to me.”
Nanni Moretti has the reputation of being a difficult man? “To be serious means to have a bad character? Nanni believes in his work, takes risks, and puts himself on the line. He doesn’t make decisions lightly and doesn’t try to compromise. He’s such a sharp contrast with the easy-going attitudes of today. He’s very demanding and that’s what comes from his seriousness.
