And the Nominees for Best Director Are – The David di Donatello Awards

There are 8 directors nominated for best director and of their 8 movies I have seen 6 of them (and one I wish I hadn’t – Immaturi)  so again, I am only making an educated guess. If you have seen Marco Bellocchio’s “Sorelle Mai” or Michelangelo Frammartino’s “Le Quattro Volte” and would like to weigh in on their merits, please do. I am handicapped by my location – as an American if I didn’t see it on a trip to Italy and it isn’t available on DVD I haven’t watched it.

I think this may be Mario Martone’s  year for “Noi Credevamo” and I am going to say that a) he should win and b) he will win. I loved most of the other movies and I was almost tempted to pick Claudio Cupellini for “Una Vita Tranquilla” or Daniele Luchetti for “La Nostra Vita” – both told well crafted, compelling stories.

But “Noi Credevamo” is the kind of movie that Italy makes best – the sweeping, emotional, epic. It’s a showcase for the best of Italian acting with Toni Servillo, Luigi Lo Cascio, Francesca Inaudi and tons of others; and it’s already been honored at Venice and by the Italian Film Critics with “ll Nastro d’Argento”.

That’s my pick – what’s yours?
