I’m sorry I’m not writing about anything interesting today – I really can’t stop thinking about Venice.
It’s kind of crazy; I didn’t put 2 and 2 together until last night when I thought, “The Venice Film Festival is August 31 til September 10.” And then I thought, “I’m going to be in Italy until September 12.” And then, in a very delayed reaction I screamed, “Hey! I can go to the film festival!”
So I got myself a hotel for the last 2 days (goodness they jack up the prices for that thing) and changed my return flight from Rome to Milan – and I’m going. I called American Express and they’ll make sure I get tickets that I want.
The Venice Film Festival (Italian Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica) is the oldest film festival in the world. Founded by Count Giuseppe Volpi in 1932 as the “Esposizione Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica”, the festival has since taken place every year in late August or early September on the island of the Lido, Venice, Italy.
The festival’s principal awards are the Leone d’Oro (Golden Lion), which is awarded to the best film screened at the festival, and the Coppa Volpi (Volpi Cup), which is awarded to the best actor and actress. In 2002, the San Marco Award was introduced for the best film of the Controcorrente (“Against the stream”).
Last year wasn’t a big year for Italians but this year it will be – I feel it in my bones! Last year Sofia Coppola‘s Somewhere won Golden Lion and Quentin Tarantino made a crack about nothing good coming out of Italy (I will forever hold it against him).
The official lineup will be announced in July – don’t worry, I’ll keep you posted.
And most likely I’ll be bragging nonstop. Sorry in advance.
