A line of a talking heads song resonates in the dazed world of Paolo Sorrentino. Sorrentino’s film is made of characters that are real but not typical, and lets itself be charmed by rock and roll and by a severely depressed and eccentric lead character.
With wild hair, red lipstick, and black mascara, the ex-rock star Cheyenne, played by Oscar winner Sean Penn, the seducing and laconic protagonist, goes back to America to see the dying father that he hasn’t seen for years, and decides to fulfill his dying wish, to find the Nazi responsible for the torture that he suffered in a concentration camp during World War II .
He leaves like that on a vendetta that can reawaken him from the lethargy from his years of retirement, and begins like this, even if he has no real instinct or investigatory skills, on an investigation into the dark alleys of America. At his side is his friend Jane, (Frances McDormand) and other random companions that he encounters on the road, a group of diverse people that come together from a vague sense of awkwardness and find a reason to be in small everyday happinesses.
