Four New Italian Movies In Competition At The Rome Film Festival

La kryptonite nella borsa looks very cute

I will once again miss the film festival in Rome (sigh). It’s in its sixth year and running from Oct. 27 to Nov. 4.

In competition are four films from Italy:

La kryptonite nella borsa (Kryptonite in the bag), by Ivan Cotroneo, with Valeria Golino, Cristiana Capotondi, Luca Zingaretti, Libero De Rienzo, Fabrizio Gifuni, and Luigi Catani. The tagline for this one is “Every family has its secrets and some are funnier than others.”  Valeria Golino plays the depressed mother of a big family with a nine-year-old boy who believes his dead cousin is Superman. Thanks to this imaginary friend, he is able to survive the family problems. With Valeria Golino (Giulia Non Esce La Sera) and Luca Zingaretti (La Nostra Vita) this one sounds promising.

Il cuore grande delle ragazze ( The big hearts of women) by Pupi Avati with Cesare Cremonini, Micaela Ramazzotti, (La Prima Bella Cosa) Gianni Cavina, Andrea Roncato and Erica Blanc takes place in the 30s and stars the singer Cesare Cremonini from the Italian band Lunapop as a young man who is looking for love in a family with three daughters.

Il mio domani (my tomorrow) by Marina Spada with Claudia Gerini (Iris Blond, Non ti Muovere, La Sconosciuta) , Raffaele Pisu, Claudia Coli, Paolo Pierobon, Lino Guanciale, and Enrico Bosco is  about a businesswoman in crisis, having an affair with her boss and trying to come to terms with stuff from her past. It sounds a little ho-hum but I love Claudia Gerini so we’ll see.

Il paese delle spose infelici (The country of the unhappy brides) from Pippo Mezzapesa and with Nicolas Orzella, Luca Schipani, Cosimo Villani, Vincenzo Leggieri and Gennaro Albano is from a book with that name and about young boys who are mesmerized by a beautiful and mysterious woman who shows up “flying from the top of the church and dressed like a bride”. The chances that I have misinterpreted that translation are very high, but that’s what I think it says.
