So far, you have eluded me, Luigi. When I am in your neighborhood in Rome I have my eyes permanently peeled for you – I am your American stalker.
Don’t worry, I’d just like a picture with you and to tell you how much I admire your work. You are, officially, il mio preferito – my favorite, and I’d like to wish you I very happy birthday.
Born in Palermo on October 20, 1967, he came from “a happy family with 5 kids and a grandmother that lived with them”. He was always the shortest in his classes in school, even shorter than the girls. I’m sure even still, he was always the cutest.
He came from a family of doctors and thought of becoming a psychiatrist like his uncle, but went into acting instead, and has starred in some of my favorite movies.
In Spike Lee’s English language movie about the true story of black soldiers in Italy and a massacre in a small Italian village, Luigi plays the child, Angelo Torancelli, as an adult.
Mio Cognato, My Brother-in-law, would do very well in the US. I loved it – it’s a funny but also tragic buddy film about two guys trying to find a stolen car. Take a look.
Marco Bellocchio’s Buongiorno Notte, Good morning, night, is a powerful movie about the kidnapping of Aldo Moro and it won at the Venice Film Festival and best picture at the David di Donatello awards. Read what I wrote HERE.
The amazing La meglio gioventù, the best of youth, was originally a TV mini-series and is 6 hours long, but don’t let that scare you. It’s worth your time.
Luigi won a best actor award at the Venice Film festival for his role as the lonely limo driver in Luce dei miei occhi, Light of my eyes. Read my review HERE.
