Take a look at the top ten Italian box office hits for 2010/2011: (Click on the links for reviews)
- Che Bella Giornata – To date grossing € 43,474,047.00, anyone who knows me can tell you that I love Checco, and though it is not what you would call “high-brow” humor, he’s pretty funny.
- Benvenuti al Sud – To date grossing € 29,867,707.00, this one’s a gem – and I can’t wait for the sequel, Benvenuti al Nord.
- La Banda dei Babbo Natale – To date grossing € 21,437,544.00, this one is at the top of my list of favorite Christmas movies. Every year while I deck my halls and wrap my presents I watch White Christmas and Elf, and now I’m adding Aldo, Giovanni, and Giocomo’s La Banda dei Babbo Natale to the Christmas fun.
- Natale in Sudafrica – To date grossing € 18,593,258.00, I haven’t forced myself to watch this one yet, but I have it. I’ll get around to it before Christmas but I could practically write the review without watching it. If I’m lucky it will fall under the category of “so bad it’s good.”
- Qualunquemente – To date grossing € 15,868,940.00, my initial reaction to this film was “WTF??”, but Italians and other Europeans who read this blog have helped me see the beauty in Cetto La Qualunque. It’s actually quite stunning.
- Immaturi – To date grossing € 15,165,108.00, there’s no surprise here. This is a silly movie with pretty people (Roaul Bova!), cute and mindless about a group of 30-something friends that, through a clerical error did not actually graduate from high school and have to retake their final exams.
- Maschi Contro Femmine – To date grossing € 13.612.121, this one kind of pisses me off. It’s really stupid.
- Femmine Contro Maschi – To date grossing € 11,601,615.00, the sequel to Maschi Contro Femmine is a little bit less stupid, but still pisses me off.
- A Natale Mi Sposo – To date grossing € 8,196,580.00, I have this one but have not watched it. I’m saving it for Cinepanettone season.
- Nessuno mi può giudicare – To date grossing € 7,942,035.00, I liked but didn’t love this one and if you’ve been reading the blog lately you will see that I’ve been bitching about it.
What does this list tell me? A) Checco is king, B) cinepanettone is beloved, and C) everybody loves a stupid comedy. It also makes me happy, because these 10 are in the top 20 of the the entire Italian box office results, including Hollywood movies. In fact, the top two are Che Bella Giornata and Benvenuti al Sud, a Hollywood movie doesn’t appear until the third slot – and surprise! It’s Harry Potter.
