Silvio Orlando is one of the most prolific of the modern Italian actors and yet little is known of him here in the US. Star of the award-winning movie I reviewed a few days ago, Il Papà di Giovanna, one that I was able to screen along with the entire cast at the Venice Film Festival, Missione di Pace, and dozens of other films, you may have seen him with Nanni Moretti in Caos Calmo andLa Stanza del Figlio.
I’m always on the lookout for movie stars in Rome and Milan and I happen to have run into Silvio twice, once at the Eden Film Center in Rome, and once at the Venice Film Festival – he graciously let me babble on a bit with him in my bad Italian. It seems that a lot of actors are shorter than they look on-screen, but Silvio is pretty darned short – shorter than me, and I’m 5’3″. He’s got kind eyes and a warm smile that seem genuine, and I know that if he’s in a film, even if I don’t like it, I’ll love him in it.
From Naples, he’s my age – we’ll both turn 55 this year, and in his long and impressive career he has worked with all the big name directors; Nanni Moretti, Daniele Luchetti, Paolo Virzì, Michele Placido, Carlo Mazzacurati, Pupi Avati, Gabriele Salvatores and others.
