We have a Nanni Moretti movie – soon, in limited theaters in the US – That means no Cleveland, Ohio dates, I’m sure. I guess I’m flying to New York again.
But the good news: Moretti’s Habemus Papam, We Have a Pope opens April 6 and will go “on demand” the following week (April 12).
Angela Leucci from diredonna.it wonders if the US will appreciate the irony of the film and I’m wondering the same thing. As I said in my review of Habemus Papam, those who hate the Catholic church were hoping for a skewering of it by Moretti, and those who hate Moretti were ready to organize protests against him for offending the church and though the movie is neither a skewering or offensive, many people can’t seem to admit it and look at the film for what it is, a really well told story.
Will the New York Times, for example, be able to look past its blatant hatred of the Vatican and see the beautiful film that Moretti has made? (I’m guessing “no”.)
And to Leucci, who wonders why we in the US had to change the title from the universally understood “Habemus Papam” to “We Have a Pope”- Latin’s a little too fancy for us here in America, Angela. I’m not even sure how ironic I am being when I say this; it’s sad, but it’s true. And I can’t guess how well the movie will do here, but I am here to say that I loved it and that it is worth seeing.
