You all seem to be clamouring for Riccardo Scamarcio – I get it. He’s hot. He just made the cover of the April 5 Icon section of Panorama Magazine – with the headline, “Riccardo Scamarcio/Non si può piacere a tutti”. That means, “you can’t please everybody”, but he’s surely pleasing to a lot of us.
He’s the first Italian to make the cover, following Vincent Cassel, Adrien Brody, James Franco and Michael Pitt and he gives an interview, one that made me cringe a little, complaining about the state of Italian cinema.
“There’s no great fervor in Italian cinema”, said Scamarcio, “it’s certainly lost ground at an international level. To be honest, the money’s not there, and no one is very daring. Our little market is constricting for filmmakers…comedy’s the only thing that works.”
It feels like sour grapes to me, because he hasn’t had a really good role since Ferzan Ozpetek’s Loose Cannons in 2010 – since then he’s been taking smaller roles in non-Italian movies like France’s Polisse, England’s Effie, and Woody Allen’s To Rome With Love.
Maybe the clock’s ticking a little loudly, RIccardo? I know you don’t want to be remembered as just another pretty face.
