It was on the fake Cannes Film Festival list; will it be on the real one?
When it was announced on April 2nd that the lineup had been leaked, two Italian films were mentioned; Marco Tullio Giordana’s Piazza Fontana and Big House, Matteo Garrone’s first film since his 2008 Cannes Festival award-winning Gomorrah.
Big House was inspired by Italy’s obsession with the reality TV show Grande Fratello, the Italian version of Big Brother. Based on the original Dutch version, housemates are locked up together in a house and viewers can watch them 24 hours a day, voting the ones they don’t like off the show as the season progresses; it began in 2000 and has completed 11 seasons
In Garrone’s story, a fish merchant from Naples who is infatuated with the show starts living his life as if he were on it. Starring Claudia Gerini, Ciro Petrone and Arturo Gambardella it’s supposed to open in Italian theaters May 4, but is it slotted for Cannes instead?
The leak turned out to be an April Fools Joke, or a poisson d’avril, as they call it in France, from a French blog and was quickly discredited by Cannes organizers. I guess we’ll have to wait for April 19th when the actual lineup is announced.
