Forget Fellini; there’s a new crop of Italian film directors that are doing some interesting and important work right now. A list of those not nominated in 2012 is outstanding on its own; Silvio Soldini, Marco Bellocchio, Matteo Garrone, Giuseppe Tornatore, Giuseppe Piccioni, and Daniele Luchetti, but this year’s nominated directors should make Italy very proud.

For the David di Donatello Award in the best director category:

Paolo TAVIANI, Vittorio TAVIANI – Cesare deve morire
Nanni MORETTI – Habemus Papam
Ferzan OZPETEK – Magnifica presenza
Marco Tullio GIORDANA – Romanzo di una strage
Emanuele CRIALESE – Terraferma
Paolo SORRENTINO – This Must Be the Place
