Nanni Moretti’s We Have A Pope and Gianni Di Gregorio’s The Salt of Life are playing at a theater near you – hopefully. The distribution is limited but the movies are out there.
We Have A Pope is playing here in Cleveland, Ohio, and we aren’t exactly on the cutting edge of anything, so check the theaters in your city – chances are if we have it, you have it too.
We Have A Pope, or Habemus Papam, as it was originally called, is about a newly elected Pope who isn’t sure he wants the job. Everybody was ready to protest this film for something before it was released; some thought it would be too insulting and some thought it would be not insulting enough, but it turned out to be neither of those things. It’s just a very human story and very well done. It’s been nominated for a couple of big Italian academy awards (the David di Donatello Awards); best picture and best director (Moretti).
Gianni Di Gregorio’s The Salt of Life is not playing here in my city, though it was at our international film festival. The distribution is not as wide; check for cities, dates and times here.
The Salt of Life, or as it was originally called, Gianni e le Donne, is about Gianni, retired, and struggling to stay relevant in his golden years. His buddies suggest he take a lover, but it’s not as easy as it looks.
