The indie film distributor, Oscilloscope Laboratories, founded by the late Beastie Boys Adam Yauch has acquired U.S. rights to Matteo Garrone’s Reality, a dark comedy about a man who dreams of being a contestant on Big Brother, a reality show that is wildly popular in Italy. The film, Garrone’s follow-up to 2008’s Gomorrah, debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival.
This is the company’s first big acquisition (and, thank you Oscilloscope, for bringing it to the US). “Reality is an exceptional, one-of-a-kind film that had us hooked from its amazing opening shot. It is a complex, provocative, and deeply compelling look at our media-obsessed culture, executed by one of the most interesting and talented filmmakers working today. Garrone pays homage to classical filmmakers such as Fellini and Scorsese while crafting a fresh and very relevant contemporary story. This is exactly the kind of film Adam Yauch wanted to champion, and we are extremely proud to have it join the Oscilloscope family,” new company head David Laub said.
I’m still waiting for The Weinstein Company to release “This Must Be The Place“, so I hope we don’t have a big wait for this one, too.
