All of the winners for the Nastro d’Argento awards, given by the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani will be announced this weekend in Taormina, but the comedy of the year was announced yesterday: Carlo Verdone’s Posti in Piedi in Paradiso.
No, I’m not kidding.
The movie that Brian and I walked out on at Open Roads: New Italian Cinema in New York, is being awarded for excellence. I suppose I’ll have to spend some time examining the difference of opinion between me and all of the Italian film critics, and I guess I’ll have to watch the stupid thing again.
I am not a hater of Italian comedies. I laughed genuinely during Kryptomite Nella Borsa, Magnifica Presenza, Scialla!, and Nessuno Mi Può Giudicare during the film festival. But Posti in Piedi? (They called it “A Flat For Three” in New York.)
I’ve never been a huge fan of Micaela Ramazzotti, but I guess Verdone wanted a beautiful woman who could act goofy in a kind of screwball comedy way. Paola Cortellesi can pull that off but Micaela couldn’t. She wasn’t funny at all.
I think Carlo Verdone may be losing his touch. The premise of A Flat for Three (3 divorced guys sharing an apartment) is tired, the look is dated, and the acting surprisingly weak. I’ve always loved Carlo Verdone and so it’s extra disappointing.
Obviously I am outnumbered. The Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani has spoken!
So, who wants to explain Italian comedy to me?
