I think Sophia Loren must have missed a nap or something when she was accepting the Taormina Art Award from Carlo Verdone at the Taormina Film Festival; she seemed a little like a cranky old lady.
“How sad that certain of my colleagues re-do themselves to feel different”, the actress said. “Some women that re-do themselves should be ashamed – si dovrebbero vergognare. (Was she talking to Monica Bellucci?)
And then she attacked the Italian film industry: “I’d love to do a film with Carlo Verdone; he’s not a young man and he’s still very good. The other directors make little films, not all of them, but most of them do, and the foreign market doesn’t exist.”
Sophia, you weren’t expecting a rebuttal from an American woman who you’ve never met and care nothing about, but you’re getting one:
About the “rifare” – the getting “work” done (i.e. botox and plastic surgery): It’s not for me either, but not everybody has your genes, Sophia. I agree that some women go overboard (Monica Bellucci), but I don’t see what the big deal is about getting a little help, especially for women who aren’t as lucky as you and aren’t natural beauties that have aged so gracefully.
And instead of dismissing the modern Italian directors, someone like you should be encouraging them. To say that Carlo Verdone is one of the only directors doing anything important these days is a very odd (and stupid) thing to say. For one thing, Verdone is one of the least exportable of the directors, and to put him ahead of Crialese, Sorrentino, and Moretti – si vergogni Sophia!
