Paolo Sorrentino was awarded best director for his English language film, This Must Be The Place, starring Sean Penn and Frances McDormand. This Must Be The Place is the story of an aging rock star who goes on a road trip across the US to avenge his father’s humiliation at the hands of a Nazi who’s been hiding out in mid-America.
I would not have been unhappy with any of the nominees winning this award. Also nominated were Emanuele Crialese for Terraferma, Marco Tulio Giordana for Romanzo di una strage (Story of a Massacre), Ferzan Ozpetek for Magnifica Presenza (Magnificent Presence), and Daniele Vicari for Diaz (Diaz: Don’t Clean Up This Blood).
It was a very good year for Italian movie directors.
Best screenwriting went to Stefano Rulli and Sandro Petraglia for Romanzo di una Strage, and the best actor and actress awards went to two from that movie, Pierfrancesco Favino and Michela Cescon.
So when is America going to get the chance to see This Must Be The Place?
