Looking forward to this in Venice – it’s in competition in the Orrizonti category. Orrizonti means “horizons”, and this category seems to refer to movies that are a little more progressive.
Giulio is 40 and is living a pretty ordinary life in his rented apartment. He’s got a steady job, a car loan, a rebellious daughter, a sweet little boy, and a wife that he loves but he’s cheating on. When he’s discovered, his perfect life all of a sudden goes to pieces.
What happens when a couple dares separate? Giulio finds himself struggling to pay two rent checks, double utilities, and to live a solitary life without his family, eating his meals alone in his crummy apartment while he hides from his creditors.
And he’s got no one to help him. He’s a good man and a good father who doesn’t want his kids to pay for his mistakes. Suddenly this strong man who never feared anything is afraid of everything. He never sleeps; his reason for living is to make enough money to pay his bills and buy thing things his kids want.
He becomes an equilibrista – a tightrope walker without a future, eyes closed and fear in his heart.
Giulio is played by Valerio Mastandrea from La Prima Cosa Bella (The First Beautiful Thing) and Barbora Bobulova plays his wife. Gli Equilibristi is directed by Ivano De Matteo, and it looks like this is his big screen directorial debut.
