Finally, a movie at the Venice Film Festival. That’s why I’m here, after all. On the way to the 2:00 screening of my favorite actor Luigi Lo Cascio’s directorial debut, La Citta’ Ideale I stopped to see which famous actor an eager throng of filmmgoers was hanging out to watch arrive by boat; could it be Luigi? I asked the teenage girls in front of me who they were waiting for and they breathlessly told me, “Zak Ephron!” (They said it more like “Zahhhhhk Ayfrome”, but I got it).
Zak Ephron can jump in the canal; I was desperately seeking Lo Cascio.
I was beside myself with glee waiting for the doors to open at the festival’s Sala Darsena and to be allowed in, and it was worth the wait because Luigi LoCascio was in attendance. The audience welcomed him warmly, and after the screening the ovation was explosive.
I admit, I’d been nervous. Luigi seems like a pretty stern and dedicated guy that might border on humorless, but La Citta’ Ideale makes it clear that this is not the case. His movie is a refreshing and innovative mixture of comedy and drama and it was good. Period.
Check in tomorrow for the review.
