There are subtitles in this original version of Nuovomondo (The Golden Door), but probably not the kind you are looking for. The language is an older Sicilian dialect and so the subtitles are in Italian! In this movie about a poor Sicilian family coming to “the land of milk and honey”, America, by ship and landing on Ellis Island, there’s some English, too. Charlotte Gainsbourg plays a mysterious British woman with a shady past who joins the family on the boat.
It’s directed by Emanuele Crialese and Isabella Ragonese has a small but powerful part – her acting is so good you might not recognize her!
Check it out even if your Italian isn’t perfect. It’s a beautiful movie. And if you want to watch it watch with English subtitles, you easily can. Nuovomondo is available from Netflix and Amazon.
