What was it about Sophia Loren? She has said:
I think the quality of sexiness comes from within. It is something that is in you or it isn’t and it really doesn’t have much to do with breasts or thighs or the pout of your lips.
That said, there isn’t exactly an army of knock-out Italian actresses filling her shoes these days, and I wonder why. It’s not like there is a shortage of good-looking Italians.
Don’t get me wrong; Margherita Buy, Valeria Golino, and Giovanna Mezzogiorno are beautiful women and wonderful actresses. But they are no Sophia Loren.
Monica Bellucci comes closest. She’s crossed over to Hollywood movies, but she’s never made that big splash that Sophia did. And she’s held up pretty well considering she’s pushing 50, but Sophia did it without Botox.
And does she have the same sense of fun, energy, and warmth that Sophia Loren had and still has? I don’t think so.
Compare and contrast: Sophia Loren with Clark Gable in It Started in Naples and Monica Bellucci with Vincent Cassel in L’appartement.
Where is the next Sophia Loren? Has the mold been, as they say, broken?
