I’m back from Rome with lots to talk about. I saw only four movies but they were interesting ones, and I return with some new insights into 2013 and what it holds for the Italian movie industry.
“The New Italian Cinema is Now”, claimed one movie magazine cover, and though practically everyone was disappointed by the films of 2012, everyone is pretty excited about 2013; and why not? Right off the bat we have Giuseppe Tornatore’s English language film starring Geoffrey Rush, La Migliore Offerta or The Best Offer (and I got to see this one), and we can look forward to Gabriele Salvatore’s English language Educazione Siberiana (Siberian Education) with John Malkovich.
I can’t wait for Fausto Brizzi’s Pazze Di Me, an Italian comedy with a mostly female cast playing the lead characters. In it, Francesco Mandelli plays a guy who is the only male presence in a family of women; mother, sisters, aunts, and a housekeeper who can all be a little overpowering. When he meets the girl of his dreams he, in order not to scare her off, tells her that he is an orphan.
Also looking like giallo good fun is Il Volto Di Un Altra (The Face of Another), from director Pappi Corsicato. With Laura Chiatti and Alessandro Preziosi, it’s plastic surgery on reality TV and we can expect over-the-top camp; 1970s Italian movie fans should be excited.
Tomorrow I’ll have the review of The Best Offer, and if this one doesn’t get abandoned like Sorrentino’s This Must Be The Place, I think America will really enjoy it.
