Just when I’ve been complaining about the lack of good stories I’m reminded of Un Giorno Devi Andare – (we’re calling it There Will Come A Day here in the states) from director Giorgio Diritti.
Diritti, who directed a movie I called one of the 10 best of the last 10 years, L’uomo Che Verrà (The Man Who Will Come), premiered this new one at this year’s Sundance Film Festival and it opens March 28 in Italian theaters.
Jasmina Trinca, who we Americans remember so fondly from movies like La Meglio Gioventù (The Best of Youth) plays Augusta, traveling by boat along the Amazon in Brazil, ministering to the “Indios” along with Sister Franca (Pia Engleberth), an Italian nun. A failed marriage and the news that she will never have children has sent her out of Italy in search of reasons to live.
The reviews are glowing: Variety Magazine says that the film’s visuals “range from the sublime to the joyous“. The Hollywood Reporter says: There Will Come a Day is a quiet, heartfelt story of grief and the longing for faith in God. A strong sense of place, often accompanied by beautiful scenes of the Amazon, will help with art house patrons, while strong performances bolster a narrative more reliant on atmosphere than plot.
L’Uomo Che Verrà was never distributed in the US (I want to understand a system in which this one isn’t and Vallanzasca – Angel of Evil is) and so we can only hope that Americans will get the chance to see There Will Come A Day.
