It’s Cristina Comecini’s birthday, the award-winning daughter of neorealist director Luigi Comencini and sister of director Francesca Comencini.

She’s been nominated for and/or won David di Donatello Awards, Nastro d’Argentos, and European Film Awards and her 2005 La Bestia Nel Cuore (Don’t Tell) was nominated for an Oscar.

Her most recent, Quando La Notte ( When The Night) drew boos and jeers from critics at the Venice Film Festival in 2011 and her 2008 Bianco e Nero (Black and White) was a silly soap opera that I nearly walked out of at the theater, but Cristina tries to address serious issues in her films like incest (La Bestia Nel Cuore), interracial relationships (Bianco e Nero) and postpartum depression (Quando La Notte).
La Bestia Nel Cuore is her best and it’s available in the US with subtitles.
