“Will La Grande Bellezza win the Palme D’Or at Cannes? The possibility seems remote, this year there are some really important directors,” says Paolo Sorrentino, of his film, the only Italian film in competition at Cannes this year. He explained that it’s about Rome, its decadence and its beauty, because there is beauty in the decadence. (I think that sums up Rome pretty well.)
He’d thought of calling the film something else, “one decidedly conceited ‘L’Apparato Umano’, ( ‘The Arrogant Human?” – somebody with better Italian please help me with this one!) Some are comparing it to Fellini’s La Dolce Vita, but it’s a comparison that Sorrentino hurries to distance himself from. “Fellini’s film is a masterpiece…mine is a film.”
