Al Pacino will star in the upcoming L’Orecchio Del Potere (The Listener will be the English title), based on Giulio Andreotti’s book, Operazione Via Appia. Filming will begin at the end of 2013 or the beginning of 2014. The controversial Giulio Andreotti was an Italian politician of the centrist Christian Democracy party and served as the 41st Prime Minister of Italy from 1972 to 1973, from 1976 to 1979 and from 1989 to 1992, but he was also a journalist and an author.

Operazione Via Appia is the story of a young man who near the end of World War II decided to renounce his plans to become a priest and began working for the government censorship office intercepting phone messages, uncovering one between Mussolini and his lover that would change the course of Italian history.

The film will be directed by 92-year-old  Carlo Lizzani, who also wrote the screenplay:

“Al Pacino has read the screenplay and he likes it. We are waiting to hear about when he’ll be available to start shooting, it should be by the end of the year.”

Pacino will play a “key role”, but they aren’t saying who he’ll play. I guess his Italian must be pretty good!
