Screenwriter Vincenzo Cerami died on July 17 in Rome. Having written over 40 screenplays, he’s best remembered for Roberto Benigni’s Life Is Beautiful.
His nominations and awards include an Oscar nomination for Life is Beautiful and a Nastro d’Argento for Benigni’s The Tiger and the Snow.

Last June 14, when Cerami received a career David di Donatello and was unable to attend the ceremony because of his illness, Roberto Benigni and composer Nicola Piovani accepted it in his place. “He taught me many things,” Benigni said, “especially that only amateurs wait for inspiration, others roll up their sleeves and get to work. He was precise, and being precise is a quality that belongs to great visionaries.”
