This Weekend In Italian Movie Theaters

This is your chance to show everybody that you support your own filmmakers, Italians; two celebrated movies are opening in a theaters near you this weekend. I’ll be watching and hoping for big box office results for:

The winner of this year’s Leone D’Oro, Gianfranco Rosi’s ‘Sacro Gra’

Sacro Gra is a documentary, the first to win the Golden Lion, about the highway that makes a ring around the city of Rome and the people that live out there. It’s a lovely gem that I compared to Dr. Seuss’s Horton Hears a Who;

and…

Emma Dante’s Via Castellana Bandiera, Coppa Volpi (best actress) winner, Elena Cotta

The winner of this years’s Coppa Volpi at Venice went to Elena Cotta, playing an older woman, depressed and in mourning for her daughter, who refuses to back up when her car meets another car in a narrow Palermo street that will only allow one car at a time.

Though I think that there were other Italian films that were screened but were not in competition at Venice that were better than Via Castellana Bandiera (La Prima Neve and Piccola Patria), the film is definitely worth the price of a movie ticket and I’d love to hear from you after you see it.

Ron Howard’s ‘Rush’ opens this weekend in Italy too, and even though I am excited about the cast (Pierfrancesco Favino is in it), I hope it doesn’t know Via Castellana Bandiera and Sacro Gra out of the water.
