So many good movies this year from Italy! I’m unveiling my personal top ten list tomorrow, but today, here are some of my favorite lines from Italian films, 2013.
My translations, so corrections from those of you who speak better than Italian than I are welcome!
In Paolo Sorrentino’s ‘La Grande Bellezza’ – Jap ( Jep? Gep? Nobody spells it the same way) Gambardella, played by Toni Servillo said:
1)”Non volevo essere semplicemente un mondano, volevo diventare il re dei mondani. Io non volevo solo partecipare alla feste, io volevo avere il potere di farle fallire!”

It always ends like this, with death. First, though, there was life, hidden from the blah blah blah.
Virgil’s (Geoffrey Rush) assistant said to him in Giuesppe Tornatore’s ‘La Migliore Offerta’
“Vivere con una donna è come partecipare ad un’asta. Non sai mai se la tua è l’offerta migliore”
Living with a women is like bidding in an auction. You never know if yours is the best offer.
One of Michele’s (Luigi Lo Cascio) lawyers said to him in La Città Ideale:
Lei ha una nozione molto ingenua della verità. Gli eventi, i fatti, non si possono recuperare. Le faccio un esempio: prenda una scatola, la apra, ci faccia entrare il vento mentre passa, poi per poterlo imprigionare la chiuda immediatamente. Lei pensa che quando riaprirà la scatola il vento uscirà con la stessa forza con cui è penetrato? La natura ventosa dei fatti rende impossibile che la vita ritorni così com’è stata. Olivia (Cristiana Capotondi) said to her new girlfriends in Amiche Da Morire:
“Io in carcere non ci posso andare… ci sono i bagni in comune!
I can’t go to jail…they have common showers!
Pietro, in Andrea Segre’s ‘La Prima Neve’ said:
“Le cose che hanno lo stesso odore devono stare insieme”
Things that smell the same should stay together.
Peppino (Claudio Bisio), newly elected surprise (even to him) president said in Benvenuto Presidente:
Tu non ti puoi dimettere perchè non sei presidente di niente, dovresti dimettere la tua furbizia, sennò i prossimi saranno peggio di questi (parlamentari)! Perchè questi qua sono figli nostri, il paese dove le regole non le rispetta più nessuno. Diciamo che i disonesti sono sempre gli altri…ma gli altri chi?
You can’t let yourself off the hook because you aren’t president of anything, you should start thinking you’re so smart, if you don’t, the next ones (politicians) will be worse than these guys! Because there here are our children, in a country where no one respects the rules. We say that the dishonest ones are always the others…but the others, who?
