A huge surprise for Italian producers (who’ve been clearly out of touch with reality for a long time): people are tired of stupid Christmas movies. Cinepanettone, the nickname for silly Christmas comedies, have traditionally done well, but less so in recent years and dismally this year.
This year Italians went to the movies, but bought tickets for things like The Hobbit and Frozen, passing up the Italian holiday films like Indovina Chi Viene a Natale with Raol Bova and Christian De Sica’s ‘Colpa di Fortuna’.
Ordinarily I would be sad to see the imports doing better than the home-grown films, but I see this as a good sign for Italian cinema. Italians are finally saying “NO MORE” to junk and making way for a better quality of films.
