It’s an understatement to say that things are going Carlo Verdone’s way these days. His movie, Sotto Una Buona Stella, with Paolo Cortellesi is kicking the ass of all the other movies right now, and he’s about to find out if he’ll have starred in an academy award winning film.
As Romano in La Grande Bellezza, director Paolo Sorrentino took Verdone’s comic genius and gave it a serious twist, and along side Toni Servillo played an integral part in Sorrentino’s masterpiece. I believe that this is Italy’s year for that Oscar, thanks to Sorrentino, Servillo, and Verdone.
Born in Rome November 17, 1950, Verdone has wanted to be part of movies since he was a child, thanks to his father Mario, a film historian. Little Carlito grew up rubbing elbows with famous directors like Paolo Pasolini, Michelangelo Antonioni, Roberto Rossellini, and Vittorio De Sica.
He has written, directed, and starred in dozens of films, usually in the role of the neurotic Everyman, a Roman who needs anti-depressants to get through the life that just doesn’t ever seem to be going his way.
