In a few days the Taviani Brothers (Cesare Deve Morire) will begin their new film, Meraviglioso Boccaccio and just take a look at the cast: Lello Arena, Paola Cortellesi, Kim Rossi Stuart, Carolina Crescentini, Riccardo Scamarcio, Kasia Smutniak, Michele Riondino, Vittoria Puccini, Flavio Parenti, Jasmine Trinca, Josafath Vagni.
Loosely based on Boccaccio’s Decameron, it will be filmed in a town near Florence that claims Boccaccio, Certaldo Alto, and having been there I can see why. A sleepy little walled hill town in Tuscany, walking the streets of Certaldo one could easily forget that there is a modern world out there.

“Boccaccio for us from San Miniato is a kind of next door neighbor, one that knows everyone’s stories”, explained the Taviani Brothers to La Repubblica. “It’s a life that we think about but it was never the right time. The plague, the desolation; will it be too much? It doesn’t seem so to us. What is the epidemic of today? An epidemic of disenchantment. And now the story of these yong people that take shelter in a house in the country and make a community, making new rules and turning desperation to hope and making new lives, it seems like a story from modern times. It seems a little like what happens to kinds when they go to their grandparents’ houses in the country, a rebirth that reunites them with nature and beauty.”
