Though the best way to experience Italy in a movie is to watch an Italian movie, the Merchant-Ivory film A Room With A View is pretty good fun, and I’ve found the whole thing for free on YouTube.
With Helena Bonham Carter as the ernest young Lucy Honeychurch on an Italian vacation with Charlotte Bartlett, played by Maggie Smith as very proper chaperone , Daniel Day Lewis, the priggish fiancé, and Julian Sands as the dashing and impetuous challenge to Miss Honeychurch’s sensibilities, what’s not to like?
The cast plus vintage Florence filmed in a way that few but director James Ivory and producer Ismail Merchant do so well, it’s the next best thing to an actual Italian movie and just the thing to get you extra excited about your spring break trip to Tuscany.
