Un Giorno Devi Andare

If there’s one thing for sure about director Giorgio Diritti, he’s a powerful storyteller, and his use of imagery just about trumps the dialogue in his films. His newest, recently released on DVD in Italy, is Un Giorno Devi Andare, which means “one day you must go”, but has been given the English title There Will Come A Day.

Jasmine Trinca plays Augusta, a grieving 30-year-old who takes drastic measures when she loses a baby and  is abandoned by her husband; she hitches her wagon to a nun who ministers to indigenous people along the Amazon. Having come from a devoutly Catholic family, she’s full of Christian charity and arrives with a generous spirit, but she quickly questions their mission; these people have bigger things to worry about than learning to correctly pray the rosary. Un Giorno Devi Andare is just packed with powerful themes, like dealing with loss, something practically everyone in the film is doing in one way or another and for various reasons, all turning in very different directions for comfort. Augusta, on the verge of a breakdown, travels the river, aimlessly and purposefully at the same time, almost as if she’s hoping to drop off the face of the earth.

While Diritti seems to want to challenge organized religion, he is not unkind to the faithful, and the film demonstrates a hunger for spirituality in simple and complicated ways. In the end, The Church is just people, and many of them do what they do because of their love for their neighbors, even if those neighbors are on the other side of the world.

Gorgeous scenes of Augusta’s boat gliding through the lush forests give added appeal, letting me enjoy vicariously a trip I’d be too afraid to make myself. And Jasmine Trinca – such a gifted actress! Take a look at her body of work, from La Stanza Del Figlio, to La Meglio Gioventù, to Miele, and one realizes that she’s severely underrated.
