Paolo Sorrentino is apparently going to Cannes this year, not to compete for an award but for business.
His newest film, not yet complete, is to be called Youth, will be an English language film, and will star Michael Caine, Rachel Weisz, Harvey Keitel and Paul Dano. It’s being produced by Indigo Films and co-produced by Bis Films, Pathé, C-Films and Number 9 Films.
Written by Sorrentino, the story revolves around two near-octogenarian friends who are spending their holidays in a hotel at the foot of the Alps: the retired composer and conductor Fred, and the still-active filmmaker Mick. Realising that their days are numbered, they face up to the future and observe what’s around them with a certain curiosity and tenderness, with Mick hurrying to finish off writing a screenplay, while Fred no longer has the slightest intention of continuing with his art. But there is somebody who doesn’t share that view… (From Cineuropa.org)
Sorrentino’ film will be part of the Marché du Film (Film Market), the business counterpart of the Cannes Film Festival and one of the largest film markets in the world.
Established in 1959, it is held annually in conjunction with the Festival de Cannes.
