Two years ago Matteo Garrone won the Gran Prix for Reality, the following year, there was an Oscar, Golden Globe and BAFTA for Sorrentino’s ‘La Grande Bellezza’, and 33 year-old Alice Rohrwacher keeps the ball rolling with another Gran Prix for Le Meraviglie (The Wonder).
Clearly, Italy is back in the game.
Le Meraviglie stars Alice’s award-winning sister, actress Alba Rohrwacher, four children who non-professional actors, and Monica Bellucci. It represented Italy as its only film in competition for the Palme D’Or and was one of the only two films from women directors at Cannes this year.

Le Meraviglie is the story of a family of beekeepers who lives in the Tuscan countryside during a summer that changes everything for four sisters. “The film was shot in where my sister and I grew up but it’s not autobiographical, and even if it was, it’s not the story I’d have brought to the public, ” said Rohrwacher. “To make a film with Alba, after years of going to the office every morning, was like working in my pajamas.”
